5TM Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensors Description:

User's Manual

5TM is designed to measure the volumetric water content and temperature of soil or cultivated substrate. 5TM uses an oscillator operating at 70 MHz to determine the volumetric water content of the soil by measuring its dielectric constant. Sensor A thermistor on a fork probe determines soil temperature.

5TM determines volumetric water content (VWC) by measuring the permittivity of soil (or other media) using capacitance/frequency domain techniques. Signal filtering minimizes salinity and texture effects, making 5TM more accurate in most soil and soilless media. Factory calibration includes mineral soil, potting soil, rockwool and perlite.

In 2006, Decagon upgraded its EC-5 volumetric water content sensor to an EC-TM sensor that measures both volumetric water content and temperature. Although the 5TM and EC-TM sensors use the same measurement principle, they use an improved calibration procedure and have an SDI-12 output. The 5TM uses a 5-point calibration procedure to determine the dielectric constant, which is more accurate than the previous EC-TM.
